This course provides participants with a clear and practical understanding of the role of the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) and the processes involved in managing allegations against professionals and carers. It explores what constitutes an allegation, when and how to refer to the LADO, and the responsibilities of employers and safeguarding leads in responding to concerns. Through a focus on transparency, accountability, and child-centred practice, the course supports teams to handle allegations sensitively and effectively. Participants will also reflect on how lessons learned from incidents can strengthen safeguarding practice and promote a culture of continuous improvement within services.

  • The aim of this course is to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) in safeguarding children. The course will ensure that participants feel confident in recognising and responding appropriately to allegations made against professionals and carers. It will strengthen knowledge of the correct procedures for reporting, managing, and investigating allegations, while promoting best practice through transparency, accountability, and a child-centred approach. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own practice and consider how learning from allegations can help to continuously improve safeguarding culture and outcomes for children.

  • The objectives of this course are for participants to:

    • Gain a clear understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO), including when and how they become involved in safeguarding procedures.

    • Identify the types of behaviours and concerns that require referral to the LADO, and understand the thresholds for action.

    • Learn the process for reporting and managing allegations, including immediate safeguarding actions, notification requirements, and effective record-keeping.

    • Clarify the responsibilities of the employer and the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) in managing allegations alongside the LADO.

    • Build practical knowledge and confidence in responding appropriately to concerns or allegations while maintaining a child-centred approach.

    • Explore the importance of confidentiality, transparency, and providing appropriate support to all involved parties during the allegation management process.

    • Reflect on how learning from allegations can strengthen safeguarding practice, improve risk management, and promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
