This session explores the complexities of peer-on-peer abuse, including physical, emotional, sexual abuse, harassment, and sexual violence. Participants will learn to recognise signs and indicators, respond effectively using trauma-informed approaches, and implement proactive prevention strategies to create safer environments for children and young people.

  • The aim of this training is to deepen participants’ understanding of the dynamics of peer-on-peer abuse, including harassment and sexual violence, and to equip them with effective strategies for prevention and intervention. This course will explore the underlying factors that contribute to peer-on-peer abuse, its impact on young people, and the legal and safeguarding frameworks in place to address these concerns. Participants will develop the knowledge and skills to identify early warning signs, implement proactive measures to foster a culture of safety and respect, and respond appropriately to disclosures or incidents. By strengthening awareness and preventative approaches, this training supports the creation of safer environments where young people feel protected, heard, and empowered.

  • The objectives of this course are for participants to:

    • Define peer-on-peer abuse and recognise its various forms, including physical, emotional, sexual abuse, harassment, and sexual violence.

    • Understand the complexities and dynamics involved in peer-on-peer abuse situations, including power imbalances, coercion, and the impact of harmful social norms.

    • Identify risk factors and vulnerabilities that may contribute to peer-on-peer abuse, sexual violence, and harassment.

    • Learn how to recognise signs and indicators of peer-on-peer abuse, including behaviours associated with sexual violence and harassment among children and young people.

    • Explore proactive strategies and interventions for preventing peer-on-peer abuse, harassment, and sexual violence, including promoting healthy relationships, consent, and personal boundaries.

    • Discuss the importance of creating a culture of openness, trust, and support to encourage disclosure and early intervention, with a focus on tackling stigma and barriers to reporting sexual violence and harassment.

    • Develop skills for responding effectively to disclosures of peer-on-peer abuse, sexual violence, and harassment, including safeguarding procedures, trauma-informed approaches, and support mechanisms.
