To develop parenting that helps children and young people to recover from trauma and loss. A relational focus to building connections through attuned, responsive parenting. Helping children and young people to emotionally regulate and make sense of their experiences.
The Foundations for Attachment Programme is for those parenting children who have relationship difficulties, especially children who have experienced attachment problems, trauma, loss and/or separation early in their life. The hope is that this Programme will be helpful for any carers who are having parenting challenges and enable them to increase their emotional connection with their child/ren. The programme is based upon the Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy and Practice Model developed by Dan Hughes (2009, 2011). The programme is designed within 3 modules of 2 sessions per module. This is delivered in 6 half days sessions.
The first module introduces four significant challenges faced by caregivers supporting children and young people whose capacity to emotionally connect has been compromised. These challenges include the child or young person experiencing blocked trust, fearing intersubjective connection within reciprocal relationships, struggling with high levels of shame, and miscuing their attachment needs through a pattern of expressed and hidden needs. Understanding these difficulties is crucial for fostering a supportive and nurturing environment.
The second module explores PACE as a way of being, with a focus on Connection and Correction. It emphasizes understanding what PACE is—and what it is not—highlighting that it is not merely a technique to change behavior but rather a framework for building security and strengthening relationships. This approach encourages caregivers to create an emotionally safe space where children and young people can develop trust and connection.
The third module shifts focus to caregivers themselves, examining how past relationships and attachment histories can influence parenting and caregiving approaches. It also addresses the concept of blocked care and the importance of self-care, ensuring that caregivers have the emotional resilience and support needed to provide stable, nurturing care for children and young people. The objectives of this course are for participants to:
Identify and explore the four key challenges faced by children and young people whose capacity to emotionally connect has been compromised.
Develop an understanding of how early adversity, blocked trust, and attachment difficulties influence behavior and relationships.
Learn the principles of Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, and Empathy (PACE) and how to use it to build security rather than as a behavior management technique.
Explore the balance between emotional connection and corrective guidance to support children and young people in developing trust and resilience.
Reflect on how personal attachment histories and past relationships influence parenting and caregiving approaches.
Identify the signs of blocked care and develop strategies to re-engage emotionally with children and young people.
Understand the importance of self-care and resilience-building for caregivers to maintain a nurturing and supportive environment.
