This course explores how to design and implement support plans that genuinely prepare young people for independent living. Rooted in regulatory guidance and best practice, the training helps staff understand the balance between support and autonomy, and how to engage young people in their own development. Through case studies, tools, and group discussion, staff will build confidence in assessing needs, setting goals, and tracking progress in key independence areas such as life skills, relationships, education, and self-care. The course also considers the challenges of risk, capacity, and motivation, providing practical strategies to overcome barriers and promote long-term success.
To equip staff with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to create and deliver effective, person-centred support plans that promote independence, resilience, and positive outcomes for young people in supported accommodation.
The objectives of this course are for participants to:
Understand the principles and purpose of support planning within supported accommodation, in line with the 2023 regulations.
Recognise the key areas of independence that should be assessed and developed (e.g. budgeting, cooking, emotional wellbeing, tenancy skills).
Apply a person-centred and strengths-based approach when creating support plans with young people.
Engage young people in meaningful goal-setting, ensuring their voice, views, and aspirations shape their support.
Develop realistic, time-bound, and measurable goals that reflect each young person’s starting point and ambitions.
Review and adapt support plans regularly, based on progress, changing needs, or risks.
Record and evidence support planning in a way that meets regulatory expectations and demonstrates outcomes clearly to external partners and inspectors.
