This practical and engaging course equips Family Time Practitioners with the knowledge and skills to deliver safe, purposeful and child-centred supervised family time. Participants will explore the purpose of court-ordered family time, understand the impact of attachment and trauma, learn when and how to intervene appropriately, and develop confidence in producing factual, evidence-based records that support safeguarding and inform professional and court decision-making.
This course aims to strengthen Family Time Practitioners' knowledge, confidence and skills in delivering safe, purposeful and child-centred supervised family time. It promotes consistent practice, improves the quality of observations and recording, and supports practitioners to make informed, evidence-based decisions that safeguard children and contribute to positive outcomes for families.
The objectives of this course are for participants to:
Understand the purpose of supervised family time, including the legal framework, court orders and the role of family time in safeguarding, assessment and care planning.
Recognise the impact of attachment, trauma and the child's lived experience before, during and after family time.
Support and coach parents appropriately, while maintaining professional boundaries and keeping the child at the centre of practice.
Recognise risk and respond proportionately, knowing when to observe, support, intervene, pause or end family time safely.
Use professional curiosity to identify strengths, understand behaviour and recognise safeguarding concerns.
Record family time using factual, balanced and evidence-based language suitable for court and professional decision-making.
Reflect on their practice and understand how purposeful family time contributes to better outcomes for children and families.
