This four-day programme, developed and delivered by Mary-Anne Hodd, is rooted in lived experience and informed by psychological insight. It supports professionals to embed trauma-informed, relational, and strengths-based practices across children’s services. Each session blends reflection, practical tools, and compassionate guidance focusing on how we speak, write, plan, and show up for the children and young people we support.

Day 1: Language in Care, Lived Experience, Files & Therapeutic Writing

This session explores how the language used in care settings, especially within records and reports can shape a child’s identity, self-worth, and future. Drawing on lived experience, participants reflect on the emotional impact of case files and learn how to use therapeutic, strengths-based language that honours the dignity of the child while meeting professional standards.

Day 2: A Strengths-Based Approach to ACEs, Self-Care & Wellbeing

Focusing on the personal and professional relevance of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), this session introduces a hopeful, strengths-based lens on trauma and healing. Through Mary-Anne’s lived experience, participants explore protective factors and the role of relational care, while also developing sustainable self-care practices to support their own emotional wellbeing.

Day 3: Transitions, Interdependence & Leaving Care

This session reimagines leaving care not as a journey toward independence, but as one of interdependence, connection, and belonging. Participants gain deeper insight into the emotional realities of transitions and explore practical, relational approaches that support young people’s identity, stability, and long-term wellbeing through significant life changes.

Day 4: Implementation – Embedding Theory & Therapeutic Recording into Practice

Bringing together the learning from the previous sessions, this day focuses on real-world application. Participants develop strategies to embed trauma-informed, relational practice into their daily work, aligning with their organisation’s ethos. The session offers practical tools for therapeutic recording, and space to reflect on barriers, ensuring confident, meaningful implementation.

  • The aim of this course is to equip professionals working with care-experienced children and young people with the knowledge, insight, and tools to embed trauma-informed, strengths-based, and relational practices into everyday care. Grounded in lived experience and psychological understanding, the course encourages participants to reflect on their language, recording, and relational approaches, placing the child’s voice, identity, and emotional wellbeing at the center. By fostering deeper understanding and compassionate practice, the course supports the creation of environments where children feel seen, heard, and supported to heal, grow, and thrive.

    • To deepen understanding of how language, recording, and communication impact the identity and wellbeing of care-experienced children and young people

    • To introduce therapeutic, strengths-based approaches to care that prioritise emotional safety, connection, and healing

    • To explore the lived experience of adversity, transitions, and care through reflective, relational learning
