Safer Recruitment Training equips staff with the knowledge and skills to hire safely, ensuring only suitable individuals work with vulnerable children. Participants will learn about legal requirements, best practices in recruitment, and how to conduct safeguarding-focused interviews. The training also covers pre-employment checks, risk identification, and managing safeguarding concerns. By the end, attendees will be able to implement safer hiring practices and promote a protective environment in residential children's homes.
Since the publication of the Bichard Inquiry, the staff at the Lucy Faithfull Foundation have been involved in the design and delivery of the accredited Safer Recruitment Training Courses for schools and for the wider children’s workforce. Nationally, there are but a handful of individuals authorised to deliver this ‘train the trainer’ course, which equips delegates with the knowledge and authority to deliver the one-day Safer Recruitment Workshop accredited by the Safer Recruitment Consortium.
The aim of Safer Recruitment Training is to equip staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure a safe and secure recruitment process within child-focused settings. The training emphasises the importance of safeguarding children by teaching participants how to effectively screen candidates, conduct interviews with a focus on safety, and understand the legal requirements surrounding recruitment. It also covers essential pre-employment checks such as DBS checks and reference verification to identify potential risks. Additionally, the training helps staff recognise and respond to safeguarding concerns throughout the recruitment process, fostering a culture of vigilance and accountability to ensure that only suitable individuals work with children and young people.
The objectives of this course are for participants to:
Develop an understanding of the key principles and legal framework surrounding safer recruitment practices, ensuring the safety and well-being of children and young people.
Participants will learn how to identify potential safeguarding risks during the recruitment process, including how to recognise red flags and patterns that may indicate potential harm to children.
Participants will develop the skills to follow best practices in recruitment, from job advertisements and interviews to reference checks and safeguarding declarations, ensuring a thorough and robust recruitment process.
Participants will be trained on the importance of Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks, including enhanced checks, and other safeguarding procedures such as vetting and clearance for new recruits.
Participants will gain practical knowledge and techniques for conducting interviews that prioritise safeguarding, including appropriate questioning and assessing candidates' understanding of child protection policies.
Participants will be guided in developing and maintaining a safer recruitment policy for their organisation, ensuring it aligns with current legislation and best practices.
Participants will understand that safeguarding is everyone's responsibility, and all staff, regardless of their role, should be vigilant and proactive in ensuring the safety of children and young people.
Participants will learn the correct procedures to follow when safeguarding concerns arise during the recruitment process or after hiring, including how to report and address allegations.
