This session explores the lasting impact of language, records, and reports on care-experienced children and young people. Through a lived experience perspective, participants will examine the challenges posed by negative or stigmatising language and learn practical strategies for adopting a more mindful, strengths-based approach. This session will also consider how to balance compassionate, therapeutic writing techniques with the need for factual accuracy in case recordings and official reports, ensuring records remain both reflective and professionally robust.

  • Language plays a crucial role in shaping children and young people's identity and future, influencing their sense of self and the opportunities available to them. Encouraging professional curiosity through engagement with the lived experience voice fosters deeper understanding and empathy, allowing professionals to connect meaningfully with children and young people’s realities. By incorporating therapeutic writing techniques, practitioners can adopt a holistic and compassionate approach that honors a their perspective while ensuring clarity and factual integrity in official records, including those used in legal settings.
