This session explores the concept of interdependence for care-experienced young people, challenging the traditional focus on independence during the ‘leaving care’ journey. This session is all about gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges young people face during transitions and learning how to embed interdependence within transition planning. Through practical examples, reflective exercises, and a lived experience perspective, the session will highlight how relationships, belonging, and social-emotional development shape positive long-term outcomes for care leavers. The session will also consider key legislation and external resources to support young people on their ‘leaving care’ journey.

  • It is important to challenge the traditional focus on independence in leaving care and instead reframe interdependence as essential for a successful transition. By exploring lived experience insights, we can gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by children and young people in transition, particularly care leavers and those moving between homes. Providing practical tools and resources can help foster a sense of belonging and connection, ensuring that care-experienced young people feel supported as they navigate these critical changes in their lives.

  • The objectives of this course are for participants to:

    • A shift in priorities for transition planning, moving beyond independence to valuing interdependence as a foundation for long-term well-being.

    • A deeper understanding of the lived experience of transitions, with strategies to support young people’s social and emotional needs.

    • Practical tools to promote belonging, creating environments that validate identity and foster strong, supportive relationships.

    • Empowerment strategies for autonomy and self-identity, equipping young people with the skills and confidence to navigate life beyond care; external tools, resources and approaches to support the transitions journey.
