This training course focuses on helping children’s home staff write and implement effective risk assessments that actively protect children and reflect the requirements of Regulation 12 under the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015. The session covers real-world examples of safeguarding concerns and provides practical tools for assessing, documenting, and managing risks. Participants will explore the importance of regularly reviewing assessments, involving young people in the process, and ensuring assessments support—not restrict—their development and independence. Strong risk assessments are vital not just for safety, but for inspection outcomes and professional accountability.
To develop staff knowledge and skills in producing high-quality, person-centred risk assessments that protect children from harm, promote safety and welfare, and meet the expectations of Regulation 12 in Children’s Homes.
The objectives of this course are for participants to:
Understand the safeguarding responsibilities outlined in Regulation 12 and their relevance to everyday residential practice.
Identify the range of risks children in care may face, including missing episodes, CCE, CSE, substance misuse, self-harm, and peer risk.
Apply effective risk assessment tools to measure likelihood, impact, and protective factors.
Develop clear and measurable control measures to reduce identified risks while maintaining a child-centred approach.
Demonstrate how to write and update risk assessments that reflect changes in need, incidents, and multi-agency input.
Balance safeguarding and empowerment—understanding when and how to support safe, positive risk-taking.
Evidence effective risk management in a way that supports Ofsted inspection readiness and multi-agency scrutiny.
