This course examines how communication can become a powerful therapeutic tool in working with children who have experienced early trauma. Leaders will explore verbal and non-verbal communication, attunement, and the emotional undercurrents present in everyday interactions. It will also explore the impact of dysregulation, defense mechanisms, and attachment patterns on how children give and receive communication.

  • To develop leadership understanding of therapeutic communication and to equip leaders with the skills to coach and support staff in using language, tone, presence, and silence effectively. The course also aims to improve relational repair, co-regulation, and the capacity to hold meaning in challenging interactions.

  • The objectives of this course are for participants to:

    • Define therapeutic communication and its relevance to trauma recovery.

    • Recognise how trauma influences communication and interpersonal patterns.

    • Use attuned listening and relational presence to support children’s emotional regulation.

    • Guide staff in responding to communication that may be indirect, confusing, or defensive.

    • Identify non-verbal cues and bodily communication in relational work.

    • Address the importance of tone, timing, and containment in difficult conversations.

    • Model emotionally intelligent communication as part of leadership presence.
