This session takes a lived experience and strengths-based approach to understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their impact on development and later life outcomes. Through a lived experience story of a personal ACEs journey, participants will explore how adversity shapes a children and young people's experiences, behaviours, and needs, alongside the research on protective factors, relational healing, and trauma-responsive care.

  • Bridging research and lived experience, it is essential to offer a strengths-based perspective on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), emphasizing resilience and growth. Examining the developmental impact of early adversity, including its neurological and psychological effects, helps deepen understanding of the challenges children and young people face. By exploring protective factors and compensatory experiences, practitioners can be equipped with practical strategies to mitigate harm and foster resilience. Additionally, insights into relational healing and therapeutic care ensure that support remains meaningful, responsive, and tailored to the unique needs of each child and young person.
